Post Triathlon

We did it! We hosted the first Tri to Beat Cancer-Sprint Triathlon on August 29th at Sandy Creek Park. We kicked off the weekend at the Triathlon Expo with over 500 people attending and then camerace day which took place on a gorgeous fall like day and the most beautiful sunrise I’ve ever seen. I got goose bumps as the first wave of racers entered the water. It was amazing to see so many racers and spectators participating in a great event and a very worthy cause. A special thanks to all those who raced, volunteered, sponsored and came out to see the event. We raised over $70,000 for Athens area cancer patients. The Tri to Beat Cancer Sprint Triathlon was a community event and we are very appreciative of the support we have received from you all.
All the best~ Kimberly Liebowitz, MSW

One Month until the Triathlon!

With the Triathlon exactly one month away, it is important to understand why Athens has been bitten by the triathlon bug! Again, Kim Dunker sat down with us to discuss her feelings on triathlons.

CFNEGA: What motivates you to participate in triathlons?
Dunker: I love the challenge. I love the contagious group of people triathlons bring in and I love that you can do it at any age!

CFNEGA: What do you predict will make this particular triathlon unique to other triathlons?
Dunker: The community support already has been awesome to see! This shows in the race venue. The other awesome feature that "Tri to Beat Cancer" has to offer is that it is in Athens, which hasn't had a race since the 80s. That alone makes it worth the trip to race. The race course looks semi challenging for ventures and will be a fast fun course. This will be a perfect race for any beginner that wonders what triathlons are all about. I also know the race shirts and awards are going to be memorable.

Gearing up for "Tri to Beat Cancer"

With the "Tri to Beat Cancer" Triathlon almost a month away, many are quickly trying to obtain last minute training and tips. The Cancer Foundation of Northeast Georgia caught up with professional triathlete and coach Kim Dunker of dreambelieveTRI coaching and clinics to discuss a few tips.
CFNEGA: What would be your best tip for first time triathletes?
Dunker: Prepare yourself properly, but most of all have fun out there and don't sweat the small stuff.

CFNEGA: What are specific tips to cut down time in the transition areas from swim to bike and bike to run?
Dunker: Having your shoes clipped into your pedals, and investing in a tri suit or something that you can wear for all three disciplines.

"Find a need and fill it"

When I first saw the quote "find a need a fill it" I instantly thought of the work we are doing at the Cancer Foundation of Northeast Georgia (CFNEGA). There is a great need for financial assistance for cancer patients living in our community. In 2009, the CFNEGA set a goal to provide $25,000 in financial assistance to area patients-we met our goal in the first 7 months of 2009. Rather than, shut our doors and turn patients away we went back to the drawing board and set a new goal to provide $40,000 in financial assistance. We exceeded our goal and helped 139 local cancer patients. This year, the CFNEGA set a goal to provide $51,000 in financial assistance with such a large goal in mind we had to think of a fundraiser to help us raise money. We brainstormed about what would be an interesting, fun and different type of fundraiser which lead us to the Tri to Beat Cancer-Sprint Triathlon. There was a need for such an event in Athens, and we managed to fill it.
